Weston Luminance Meter: E703/2: In Line Panel Mount Configuration, Man. Surrey 1935
One or two configurations of the widespread E703 can still be found that bear no physical resemblance to the standard model. Instead of the photronic cell being mounted on top, on the same surface as the meter face, it is mounted here behind the meter, on the same axial plane. In the example above, the unit is mounted on a hinged panel and was evidently a component on some form of industrial measurement and control assembly.
What, exactly, is not clear. The meter face is marked up with a linear scale running from 0 to 75. This reading would have been noted by an operator and used to make control adjustments. If anyone has any ideas about this particular meter, let me know.

Another collector, Paul Holton, contacted me with news and pictures of a recent find, another E703 of barrel mount configuration (designation /2). I hadn't yest posted a picture of my example, but we were able to note the differences on the meter face. Paul's is marked up with a linear numerical scale: 0 - 9. I am pretty sure this identifies it as a component in a semi-automatic printer.
What leads me to this conclusion is that I have a Weston Kodak Velox Exposure Indicator (E600) which is purely a micro-ammeter and would have been linked to a photronic cell in the printer. The numerical 10 value scale (see below) is similar to that of Paul's E703/2. His example would therefore have been incorporated as a one-piece unit in the printer - probably not made by Kodak (since they are not identified on the meter).
